Somerby Festival of Walking

The 2024 Somerby Festival of Walking took place between Friday 17th May and Sunday 19th May offering a variety of free-of-charge walks of various lengths from 3 to 15 miles.

Somerby is a small rural village in High Leicestershire, an area of rolling hills and quiet valleys set with small picturesque villages and farms.  It is a quiet rural area with an extensive network of country lanes, tracks, footpaths and bridleways and panoramic views across open countryside from Burrough Hill iron-age hill fort.

Let us welcome you to our beautiful part of High Leicestershire. Come and stay, enjoy a weekend of lovely free-of-charge  country walks led by local volunteers and why not treat yourself at one of our award winning local pubs.

Somerby is found between Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire and Oakham in Rutland.

There is a never-forgotten connection between Somerby and the 10th Bn Parachute Regiment who were billeted in and around Somerby before they deployed to play their part in the Battle of Arnhem. This September is the 80th commemoration of the Battle of Arnhem and there is a weekend of events including the annual Arnhem Parade. The itinerary can be found here: https://friendsofthetenth.co.uk/arnhem-80th-in.../

Friends of the Tenth devised the Tenth Battalion Trail, a 15 mile route around Somerby and the surrounding villages taking in sites of interest from the time the 10th Bn were billeted here before deployment to the Battle of Arnhem.

An alternative idea for a walking commemoration is the 20 mile route from Spanhoe Airfield, from where 10th Bn took of to the Battle of Arnhem, back to the 10th Bn Memorial at Burrough Court.

Both of these routes are set out on the Arnhem Walks page.
